Local Green Group in Lincoln NE - Bluestem Sierra Club

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

Since 1892, the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself. We are the largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. In 1973 the Bluestem Group was formed in Lincoln. Shortly thereafter the Missouri Valley Group was formed in Omaha. The Nebraska Chapter was formed in 1974.

The Lincoln area Bluestem Group is making positive impacts in Nebraska! We are excited to have Ken Winston leading our team as the Bluestem Organizer in 2021. He is a bright light in Nebraska! Some of the Environmental issues we continue to work on include: Advocating for immediately addressing the Environmental disaster in Mead, NE

Supporting Beyond Coal and seeing a safe shut down of the Sheldon power plant https://coal.sierraclub.org/

#NOKXL finally stopping the Keystone Pipeline! Water Is Life! No Oil in our Soil!

LES has now set a 100% renewable by 2040 goal and it is a great step forward! Along with the Lincoln Climate Action Plan, and Lancaster county updating wind regulations we are taking Lincoln in the right direction for having a more climate resilient community. https://www.lincoln.ne.gov/files/sharedassets/public/projects-programs-amp-initiatives/resilient-lincoln/documents/climate-action-plan.pdf

Bluestem continues to collaborate on community conversation roundtables about Regenerative farming, urban Ag and gardening, promoting local farmers and sustainable soil practices that will improve soil health. Water quality in Nebraska, climate change conversations (for Nebraska it is more spring flooding events and then drought trends) and the current Covid pandemic has all been extremely concerning. We also advocate for the need to address social justice and climate justice now! We find solace in working together finding solidarity in seeking solutions and always having a seat at the table for everyone. We look forward to hosting in 2021 virtual roundtables with topics like: Farm to Table Talk, Women in Environmental Justice, Nebraska Youth Climate Conversations. Bluestem is evolving, growing, and need more people to get involved where they can. One big thing you can do is check out the upcoming local elections. We encourage you to get out and VOTE! Check us out on Facebook for updates and events. We hope to connect to you soon!
